1. Texas A&M Century scholarship

In the Texas A&M University Century Scholars Program (CSP), qualifying students are awarded a $20,000 scholarship during their 4-four study and a $1,000 stipend for studying abroad. 108 Texas high schools participate in the project.

This program serves as a 4-year learning community where students receive holistic education and will get ready for the rigors of academic arenas and the professional working environment. Application deadline: December 1, 2020

2. ExxonMobil-LNESC scholarship

The ExxonMobil/LNESC Scholarship ($20,000) is awarded to outstanding graduating Hispanic high school students planning to earn an engineering degree at a post-secondary institution in the U.S.

Applicants need to be Hispanic students that reside in select areas and be accepted into an engineering program offered by an accredited university or college. Application deadline: April 4, 2021

3. George & Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation scholarship

Every year, in Spring, the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation awards 70 (seventy) $18,000 scholarships to high school seniors from the Houston area to help them pay for their undergraduate study.

The awards are disbursed over 4 years of study. Application deadline: February 17, 2021

4. Hendrick Foundation scholarship

The Hendrick Scholarship Foundation awards Amount: $16,500 scholarships to low-income high school seniors in the Plano ISD area who persevered and overcame adversity. Candidates must be academically capable to successfully earn a college degree and highly motivated.

Candidates are required to be U.S. citizens, recent Plano ISD high school graduates, have a 2.5 GPA or higher, and have financial need. Application deadline: varies.

5. Cheryl Conkling Memorial scholarship

This scholarship honors Cheryl D. Conkling and supports hearing impaired students or students with some other physical hardship and who have been demonstrating a great love for education.

This $12,000 scholarship is available to high school students living in or attending school in Conroe, Texas, and a few other select areas in the U.S. only. The deadline varies. If you want information about TSI and SAT scores, go to this page.

6. Texas Excellence in Character scholarship

The Excellence In Character Scholarship is for graduating high school students that have strong records of community service in activities that are not sponsored by their schools and who excelled in extracurricular school activities.

Each year, two $500 scholarships are awarded in Tarrant and Dallas counties. Application Deadline: June 17, 2020

7. NACME scholarship program

The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) Scholarship  Program provides block grants of $16,000 in total to universities and colleges. Check also this page for information about the Texas Student Initiative (TSI) and college credit opportunities.

The institutions award the support to talented and motivated African American, Native American, and Latino students in engineering academic programs. Application deadline: varies

8. Texas Armed Services scholarship

The Texas Armed Services Scholarship aims to encourage students to join the Texas Army or Air National Guard, the Texas State Guard, the U.S Merchant Marine, or the U.S. Coast Guard, or to be commissioned officers in any U.S. armed services branch.

Qualifying students must be high school seniors with the “International Baccalaureate Program” or the “Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan”, have a 3.0 GPA or higher, and an ACT score of at least 23 or an SAT score of at least 1070. The deadline and amount vary.

9. CPS Energy SAFE scholarship

The CPS Energy SAFE (Student Assistance for Education) Scholarship Program offers scholarships to highly-successful high school junior students looking to pursue a college degree in energy fields. Not all families have set up a Texas College Savings Plan to help fund their kids’ college education so this scholarship may be a great help.

Candidates need to live in the CPS Energy service region, be 16 years old or older, and have at least a GPA of 3.0. Recipients will be full-time participating in a CPS employment summer program. The deadline and amount vary.

10. Mike Lozano scholarship

The $2,500 Mike Lozano Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to a graduating high school athlete student from one of Texas’ 26 northernmost counties of the Panhandle. Many high school students want to take Dual Credit Courses which will exempt them from taking the TSI, shorten their time in college, and save on tuition and other costs.

Applicants need to have at least a 2.0 GPA and looking to pursue a college degree in education/coaching for the purpose of teaching/coaching at the high school level. Application deadline: October 2, 2021

11. NAJA graduate scholarship

The NAJA (National Association of Junior Auxiliaries) scholarship is awarded to students looking to render charitable services beneficial to particularly children.

12. NIADA Foundation scholarship

Each year, the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NIADA) Foundation sponsors four young students who have demonstrated outstanding skills in education.

Each student will receive a $3,500 scholarship to fund the cost of studying at the university or college of their choice. The scholarships are available in specific Texas regions that can be found on the NIADA website. Application deadline: March 9, 2021. 13. Irma Gesche scholarship-Rebekah Assembly of Texas

This $1,000 Rebekah Assembly of TX Irma Gesche Scholarship is open to any Texas resident looking to attend an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university. Candidates need to submit high school transcripts with their applications along with a typed letter outlining their expected goals. Application deadline: January 31, 2021

14. Sandy Schenker Capell scholarship

The $2,500 Sandy Schenker Capell scholarship honors Sandy and her amazing commitment to developing and mentoring young talent. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to a high school senior from the Houston area looking to pursue a career in media.

Candidates must represent the qualities and moral standards that Sandy exuded throughout her daily life. Application deadline: April 6, 2021.

15. Alliance for Women in Media-Austin scholarship

AWM-Austin awards $5,000 scholarships to talented college Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors that study media or a closely related field at an Austin area college or university.

Students who graduated from a high school in the Austin area but study elsewhere but maintain a permanent address in the Austin area are also taken into consideration. 16. Susan Howard BAFTX community service award

The $5,000 BAFTX Community Service Award is in memory of Susan Howard, the founder of the British American Foundations of Texas (BAFTX). This award is honoring young adults that have shown noteworthy initiative and tenacity as they conceptualized, initiated, and/or organized community service projects.

Candidates need to be Texas or Great Britain residents in the 11-21 age range and currently be engaged in an inspiring community service project. Application deadline: March 31, 2021.

17. BAFTX undergraduate scholarship

The BAFTX (British American Foundation of Texas) undergraduate scholarship is intended for low-income Texas families and aims to support them with financing a college education. Students may also qualify for the Texas College Access Loan (CAL) Program offered by the state to support students who otherwise couldn’t afford a college education.

The scholarship is for tuition fees of one semester and open to current college students and high school seniors. Applicants need to be Texas residents that have at least a 3.25 GPA. Application deadline: March 31, 2021, and the amount varies.

18. Dr. Barbara Odom-Wesley “Spirit of Achievement” award

The $3,000 Spirit of Achievement Scholarship honors Dr. Odom-Wesley for her amazing passion and commitment to education. Applicants must be African-American female HS seniors that attend classes in Tarrant County.

The scholarship can be used at any 2- or 4-year university or college. Application deadline: February 2, 2021

19. CBC spouses education scholarship

The Education Scholarship by the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses was set up by spouses of members of the Congressional Black Caucus as a response to federal scholarships and education program cuts that affected people of color disproportionately.

20. CBC spouses performing arts scholarship

The $3,000 Performing Arts Scholarship by the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses supports African-American students that pursue a college degree in the performing arts.

Performing arts education includes theater, music, opera, comedy, drama, dance, marching bands, and so on. Candidates must be from a CBC member’s district. Application deadline: April 30, 2021

21. CBC spouses visual arts scholarship

The $3,000 Visual Arts Scholarship by the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses provides financial support for African-American students pursuing college degrees in the Visual Arts.

Visual Arts include architecture, drawing, painting, fashion design, graphic design, illustration, interior design, photography, video production, sketching, and so on. Applicants must be from a CBC member’s district. Application deadline: Apri 30, 2021.

22. Hispanic Heritage Foundation scholarship

Nursing Scholarships in Texas

In Texas, as is the case all over the country, there usually is a dire shortage of trained nurses. This includes both LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) and RNs (Registered Nurses), especially in more rural areas.

There are quite a few rural Texas areas where entire communities are medically left underserved. One of the biggest hurdles to becoming a nurse for many students is the costs associated with enrolling in one of Texas’ LPN programs.

Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Professional Nursing scholarship

This government program provides funding in the form of a professional nursing scholarship of up to $2,500 to lower-income Texas residents looking to attend an accredited Texas nursing school that offers an LPN program.

Applicants to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board “Professional Nursing Scholarship” must enroll in the program on at least a part-time basis and the actual size of the award is based on each individual student’s needs.

Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Vocational Nursing scholarship

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is also often referred to as a vocational nurse. In some states, the LPN designation is no longer used, and there, the abbreviation LVN (or licensed vocational nurse) is often the accepted term.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board “Vocational Nursing Scholarship” is aimed specifically to assist those who want to become vocational nurses by attending an accredited LPN program in Texas.

Going to college in Texas requires incoming students to take the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) Assessment but so many students qualify for exempt status. To learn all about exempt status regulations, check out this post.

Again, qualifying applicants must be students enrolled in an accredited LPN program at a vocational or technical school (NOT a university!) in Texas,  be low-income students, and Texas residents. The maximum amount associated with this scholarship is $2,500.

Student loans in the Texas College Access Loan Program are offered by the state to support underprivileged Texas students pay for a college education.

Good Samaritan Foundation Nursing scholarship

The privately-funded “Good Samaritan Foundation Nursing Scholarship” is available for nursing students in Texas who are in the clinical phase of an LPN program or in a Registered Nurse or more advanced program.

Applicants to this scholarship must also be Texas residents and pledge to work in the State of Texas after graduation for a certain period of time or the scholarship will have to be repaid.

If this obligation is met, however, the funds never need to be repaid. The actual number of scholarships awarded and the amounts vary from year to year based upon the funding available to the Good Samaritan Foundation.
