ACCUPLACER helps educational institutions and students determine if college-bound students are sufficiently prepared to enter college and at what level they should be placed in credit-bearing college courses.
Getting optimally prepared for these placement tests is crucial as attaining high scores can mean you don’t have to take remedial classes or extra courses before your college will allow you to attend their academic courses.

The ACCUPLACER computer-adaptive test (CAT) comes with 20 math multiple-choice questions. If the test can’t be taken on a computer, and for students with specific accommodations, there is a version that includes 40 multiple-choice questions.
The ACCUPLACER Math test covers three main fields: Arithmetic, Quantitative Reasoning, and Advanced Algebra & Functions.
Arithmetic – The ACCUPLACER Arithmetic part covers five content fields and has 3-5 multiple-choice questions in:
Whole Number Operations – Here you’ll find questions on adding & subtracting, and multiplying & dividing whole numbers.
Fractions: This addresses fractions and mixed numbers. You must know how to deal with fractions in addition & subtraction, and multiplication & division. Here, you will also find questions about estimating & rounding.
Decimals: Here, you can expect questions about adding & subtracting, and multiplying & dividing decimals.
Percents: This section measures your ability to calculate percent increases & decreases, and percents of numbers.
Number comparisons and equivalents: This covers equations.
Quantitative Reasoning – The ACCUPLACER Quantitative Reasoning part covers ten content fields that all have from 1 to 3 multiple-choice questions. All ten categories involve calculating numbers (rational numbers; exponents; ratio & proportional relationships; and probability & sets of numbers.
More categories are the Creation & Evaluation of algebraic expressions; Linear Equations (including problem equations & simplification); Linear Applications & Graphs (including graphing & Systems of Equations); Descriptive Statistics (including Interpretation of Graphical Data Displays and Sample Sets, etc.); and two Geometry areas: Pre-Algebra includes Geometrical concepts relating to area, perimeter, & circumference. Algebra I Geometrical concepts cover topics such as distance formulas & the Pythagorean theorem in relation to area, perimeter, & volume.
Advanced Algebra & Functions – The ACCUPLACER Advanced Algebra & Functions section includes multiple-choice questions that cover eleven fields that come with anywhere from one to four questions.
Here, you will find two linear equations categories. In linear equations, you need to solve linear math problems and linear applications & graphs are applying these equations to real-life settings. The other fields address Factoring (quadratics, cubics, & polynomials; Creating & solving quadratic equations; Functions (including graphing & interpreting); Solving exponential & logarithmic equations); Geometrical concepts for Algebra I & Algebra II; and Trigonometry.
Please note that bringing your own calculator is not allowed. When questions require using a calculator, it will appear on your computer screen.
On the ACCUPLACER tests, there are no time restrictions. You can take as long as needed to complete the tests.
The ACCUPLACER tests are diagnostic tests that don’t include passing or failing scores. The tests are developed to indicate to educators and students how well they are prepared for college.
