In West Virginia, people looking to obtain a high school equivalency diploma (HSE diploma) still can take the exam for free. The state decided, however, to drop the GED® test in favor of the TASC exam from CTB/McGraw-Hill for its high school equivalency testing program.
Why the TASC
The Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) is cheaper than the GED test and is available both in a paper and computer format. The new GED exam is only offered computer-based. West Virginia is one of only four states in the nation that offer the exam for free. This post includes a full listing of West Virginia TASC prep facilities Just choose your nearest city to find all options in your area.
Better career options
For adults who never finished high school, getting their High School Equivalency diploma is very important because it offers them the opportunity find a good job or improve their position and it clears the way into colleges and universities. Please note that the TASC, like the GED, is NOT available online. Testing must be done at state-approved testing sites.
TASC passing score
Passing the test will improve living circumstances and TASC preparation classes are widely available. The TASC passing score is 500 points (out of 800) on each one of the 5 individual tests (Reading, Writing, Science, Math, and Social Studies), and the essay must result in no less than 2 out of 8 possible points.
TASC Classes in and around (select your nearest city):
In West Virginia, you can find numerous locations where TASC prep classes are available to support you in becoming well prepared to take the TASC exam confidently. After successful completion, you will obtain a diploma that is regarded and accepted by virtually all U.S. employers and colleges as equivalent to a common high school diploma.
TASC requirements in West Virginia
The state of West Virginia has decided that people looking to get a high school equivalency diploma will still have the chance to take the exam at no cost, but no longer is the GED exam available. The WV Department of Education has opted for CTB/McGraw Hill as the sole provider of the WV high school equivalency examination.
Replacing the GED test with the cheaper TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) allowed West Virginia to continue to offer the test for free, as one of only four states in the nation.

GED (TASC) – how to get started
You will not be able to register for the TASC program if you already have a high school diploma or when you are signed up for any other school program. By the time you think you are ready to go the TASC way, take these guidelines at heart to get ahead. Locate a TASC prep site in your region to see if you qualify. Learn about regulation, policies, and if there’s any cost involved.
Become optimally prepared before you take the test. Community bookstores and libraries can supply lots of material, and there are a few good and free online courses. Most probably, though, the best is to attend (mostly free) preparation classes at one of the many facilities in your neighborhood Just check your options by clicking on your nearest city in the listing above.
GED (TASC) – what is new
Test takers not only are confronted with a new test name, TASC instead of GED test. They will also find the new testing system to be more comprehensive and probably more difficult than the former GED test format. The TASC is much like the earlier GED exam and comes with five subtests on writing, reading, math, science, and social studies.
GED, TASC and Common Core
Then again, the new GED exam has changed completely as well and is available only computer-formatted. West Virginia’s new testing system, TASC, includes content that is in line with new Common Core standards. This is a set of definitions what students must learn and command at each grade level. Most states, including West Virginia, agreed to these definitions in order to establish a national baseline for student expectations.
The TASC exam may require a more sophisticated level of critical thinking skills. Problem-solving capacities are also required in the subject areas of science and social studies. More states have changed to the TASC system: West Virginia joined New Jersey, New York, Wyoming, Indiana and Nevada in offering the TASC instead of, or in addition to, the new GED exam. The TASC examination is offered in both a paper-and-pencil version and an online format. This gives applicants huge flexibility and allows participating states to introduce computer-based HSE testing in a phased way so students can easily get used to this way of testing.
GED – TASC preparation
Like before, preparation is hugely important, maybe even more so now. If you are a person who is disciplined and self-motivated, online classes may be your ticket. Then again, all across West Virginia, you can find (free) TASC prep facilities, just check out our post on your city and surroundings. You may as well get some books from the local library or bookstore if you prefer to study by yourself at home.
