It’s true that if you don’t use it, you lose it, and that can make your life more hectic than it needs to be.
There’s no magic date that you’re a grown-up, and time management skills aren’t innate for most people. Just like getting ready for that big test, succeeding in life requires you to make an effort. Even if you live in a little studio in the city, it’s important to designate certain areas of your home for certain activities. For example, if you want a more active love life, you might re-think that TV in the bedroom. As a writer who works from home, I know just how tempting it is to work from the couch. Unfortunately, that often means your brain won’t separate when it’s work time or relaxation time.
Multi-tasking was touted as a good thing for many years, but the reality is that very few people can do things simultaneously and well. There are so many GED holders that later on in their careers are earning their MBA degree! These people really had to manage their time very well and the same goes for space management, and your brain needs clear boundaries of what area is for what task. Even if you don’t think you have a problem with this, your subconscious might disagree. Try moving some things around, dedicating key areas to specific tasks, and see what that does for your productivity.
Create Your Zen
There are certain go-to methods that people accept as absolute truths when it comes to creating a soothing atmosphere for work. Playing classical music is an immediate example that comes to mind. However, the reality is that the only thing that works is what works for you. Personally, I can only work when the TV is on and muted.
I need the feeling of being in an office (or at least around people) and those delicious 30-second breaks in between articles. Find what truly works for you, and make sure you choose what actually does the trick and not what you wish did. If classical music annoys you, don’t think that it’s a necessity for getting things done in a timelier manner.
Be Your Own PA
Let’s say you have a doctor’s appointment, are meeting with a client and are having standing seam metal roofing put in all on the same day. That’s a lot to take in, especially if your regular tasks like picking up the kids are also on the agenda. This is where technology can be a huge help. Many women use technology while getting all set for their GMAT exam when they want to earn their MBA. Make sure you actually use those pop-up reminders, calendars, and any other apps or tools that work for you.
It only takes a few seconds to set up an appointment and a reminder. There are very few excuses for missing an appointment, short of a real emergency. Remember that time management doesn’t just impact you but everyone else who you come in contact with. Being dependable is a dying characteristic that’s easy to perfect.
