Like most industries experience will always be required so finding work in the construction field would be an ideal place to start. At some point you will need to get a construction management degree. You can obtain one through an online school or a traditional campus school. Once you have earned a construction management degree you will need to pass a certification test by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). Construction Management is the planning and coordination of a construction project from beginning to completion. It must meet the guidelines both financially and functionally that are set by the client. It is up to the project manager to make sure the project is completed on time and within budget.
A construction manager has a number of responsibilities. They are in charge of the whole project. It is their responsibility to set objectives and deadlines. They are the ones creating the budget, set performance standards, and hiring the construction crew. One of the most important aspects of a construction manager’s job is to make sure the construction site is running an efficient rate. They are the problem solvers when things don’t go right. How successful a construction project becomes depends on how well the construction manager performs their responsibilities.
The construction industry is one of most vitally important, demanding and diverse job sectors. However, say ‘construction’ to a member of the public and what will spring to mind? Builders. There’s health & safety staff, who would conduct risk assessments to determine and fix any hazards. Usually qualified, they will keep up to date as to all the latest H&S legislation, communicating it to colleagues as appropriate. Some may be consulted on more delicate matters such as safe removal and disposal of asbestos.
Alternatively there are jobs within residential housing, which may include assisting tenants with queries, managing change, working with the elderly or vulnerable and supporting funding for social housing initiatives. Roles within this area usually necessitate contact with local authorities, social services and government offices.
You’re good with a power drill? How about a role within domestic building maintenance? Roles within this family range from a handy man/caretaker to building administrator; tenant liaison to quantity surveyor. Some may be live-in roles, such as building warden; others may involve responding to customers’ queries viahelp desk.
Of course there’s building work and this, too, varies. There are the hands-on mechanical, electrical, labor/build staff, plus the back office project manager, administration, buying and planning staff.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Working in the construction industry, you could build a varied, satisfying and progressive career.
